Flama 2025
Product: Camping Light
Graduation Project
in collaboration with Heper
Flama is a modular camp lighting solution designed to enhance outdoor experiences by addressing a variety of lighting needs in one cohesive system.
As society becomes more urban, it is losing its connection to nature, resulting in stress and depression. Fire plays a big role in creating this connection. However, lighting campfires is not allowed in many environments because of the increase in fire risk due to the climate change.
Survey Results
72%
of people mention concern for starting a forest fire.
87%
of people find having a campfire important to camp/picnic experience.
66%
of people couldn’t light campfire at least once due to restrictions.
Literature research proved the positive psychological effects of campfire on people’s stress levels. The light play and the sounds have a hypnotic effect on people so it is necessary to capture the whole essence of the campfire, not just light or sound.
Trialed several mock-ups to find the best way to simulate the light play of the campfire. However, I discovered an existing product, which had a different solution.
A light bulb with fire simulation, it uses an LED grid and a driver to simulate the light play of a fire.
I decided to use this solution in my design.
Generated several concepts through sketching and ideation. These helped me understand different scenarios and how the product can adapt to them.
To make the final working prototype, I used an ESP-32 board to switch between different modes and play the fire crackles during campfire mode. The body of the prototype is made using 3D printing.
Final Prototype was almost fully functional except for the charging. The prototype is used for testing with target users.
